Make a shoe cabinet from pallets

Maja and Malin, members of Belinka’s group of ambassadors who create under the FORESTONE DESIGN brand, advise on how to make a shoe cabinet from pallets. This sustainable DIY project, which combines practicality and aesthetics, is perfect for anyone who wants to decorate their home in a natural and creative way.

To make a shoe cabinet from pallets, you will need:

  • wooden pallets,
  • a tape measure,
  • metal lever,
  • a wood saw,
  • a grinding machine,
  • screws (in our case, 3 cm long),
  • a power drill,
  • a paintbrush, and
  • thin-layer woodstain Lasur.

The process of making a shoe cabinet from pallets

First, use a metal lever to separate the boards from the pallets. Then saw them to the desired dimensions. Maja and Malin of FORESTONE DESIGN used the following dimensions:

Dimensions of the entire cabinet: 78 (length) x 37 (height) x 30 (depth) / board thickness: 2 cm

  • top boards: 3 pieces, each 78 cm
  • middle and bottom boards: 6 pieces, each 72 cm
  • side boards: 6 pieces, each 35 cm
  • reinforcement boards: 6 pieces, each 30 cm

The width of all boards except for the thin reinforcement boards is 8.5 cm (the width of the pallet from which the cabinet was made).

The width of the thin reinforcement boards can be adjusted as desired (in this case, 1 cm).

Then sand the boards and clean them of dirt. The boards are then planed to the exact thickness. First, sand the boards with 150-grit sandpaper, then with 240-grit sandpaper.

Next, prepare the reinforcement slats and drill holes in them. The reinforcement slats will be used as spacers for the air gaps between the boards.

Once the wooden boards are cut to the desired length, sanded, and dusted, assemble them into a shoe cabinet. The reinforcement slats will help you with the assembly, and you can gradually assemble the shoe cabinet with screws.

Once you have assembled the cabinet, all that remains is to protect it. If you want the wood grain to be visible after coating and the final appearance of the surface to be slightly matte, choose a thin-layer woodstain Lasur. Apply it with a brush. For the best possible protection of the wood, apply at least two or three coats, bearing in mind that the next coat can be applied after 24 hours or when the previous coat is completely dry.

Place the cabinet in front of the entrance, in the hall or in the hallway, wherever is most practical for you. If you have a shoe cabinet indoors, you can also use a water-based woodstain Interier for protection.
